Shorebased Training Courses

We currently offer the following shorebased RYA courses (through Humber Rescue):

Marine VHF Short Range Certificate

A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.

This course covers sending and receiving voice calls (routine, safety, urgency and distress), use of DSC for routine and emergency transmissions, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), and the rules, regulations and licensing of radio equipment.

The course lasts 7 hours, with 3 hours of pre-learning to be completed before attending the course. There is a 30 minute written paper, and a 15-30 minute practical examination at the end of the course. Minimum age 16 years.
